Causes and treatment of sensitive teeth
Teeth sensitivity is caused by the thinning of the tooth enamel that covers the dentin which in turn protects the inner pulp of the teeth. It can also be caused by the receding gum which exposes the root that is not adequately covered by enamel or dentin. Pain or discomfort is triggered when the nerve cells found in the dentin are stimulated by exposure to hot or cold food and beverages, contact with hard objects and exposure to cold air.
Exposure of the teeth to extreme temperatures like drinking iced beverages, eating ice cream, drinking hot milk, tea or coffee, chewing hot food, can cause the hard protective enamel to crack. Although the cracks maybe tiny, hot and cold sensations can penetrate these cracks and travel to the nerves to cause pain or discomfort.
Nearly all toothpastes clean the teeth with the use of finely ground abrasives including calcium carbonate, baking soda, aluminum oxide, and silica. Some whitening toothpaste increase the abrasives content of the toothpaste that can thin down the tooth enamel and cause teeth sensitivity. Anti tartar toothpastes can also increase teeth sensitivity. Sometimes the application of teeth whitening procedures can result in teeth becoming overly sensitive.
Using mild toothpastes and desensitizing toothpastes can alleviate the pain or discomfort of sensitive teeth. Ask a licensed dentist for advice about using the right kind of toothpaste for your sensitive teeth. Using a soft bristled toothbrush and using gentle strokes when brushing will prevent exposure and wearing down of the root surface and prevent thinning down of the enamel. If the bristles of your toothbrush wear down pointing in different directions, then you are brushing your teeth too hard. Make your stokes light and firm.
Cracks should be filled by a licensed dentist to prevent teeth sensitivity and tooth deterioration. Lesser intake of acidic food also helps to prevent tooth sensitivity.
Symptoms of tooth decay and abscess can be similar to symptoms of tooth sensitivity. Any tooth pain or discomfort should be consulted with a licensed dental health professional. Teeth sensitivity that lasts for more than four days should be brought to the dentist for professional evaluation and diagnosis. Self medication may worsen the condition and is therefore not advised.
Good oral hygiene that includes regular brushing and flossing as well as eating the right kinds of food are the best ways to prevent teeth sensitivity and other dental problems. Regular visit to the dentist at least every four months is the best way to maintain good dental health.
